Mission
Research, Educate, Heal, Improve
The Brain Health Education and Research Institute’s mission is to change the way we address protection from, and treatment of, all forms brain injury. From proactively taking care of our brain health on an ongoing basis, to post-injury treatment, to recovery, BHERI is committed to being at the forefront of research and education. Omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are critical to brain health and are one of the principal building blocks of the brain. BHERI supports Continuing research on Omega-3’s (ALA, DHA & EPA) and their impact on brain health.
An estimated 52,000 TBI patients die every year and 124,000 people experience long-term impairment of disability from their injury. Understanding that the brain is comprised of lipids (fats), the Institute’s president, Michael Lewis, MD, MPH, MBA, FACPM, has pioneered the use of this basic building block to rebuild the injured brain. It’s analogous to: if a brick wall is damaged, use bricks to rebuild the wall.
The most important of these fats, the bricks of the brain, are the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil. Given the well-documented safety and tolerability, prevention and treatment with omega-3s hold great promise in the field of traumatic brain injury. An additional and important avenue of research developed by Dr. Lewis is the use of omega-3s to increase the resilience of the brain to withstand injury so those at significant risk may be protected.
By designing and directing research as well as reviewing the latest research from NIH and major universities, BHERI is providing solutions to brain health issues.
We live by our mission every day. We believe in the proactive benefits of Omega-3 intake to improve lives and protect people from the long-term impact of brain injury.
