Some COVID-19 patients who receive hospital care exhibit clinical signs of brain damage, according to a study which says the chemical signatures of such neurological injury can be used to monitor the disease progression in those who are severely infected by the novel coronavirus. The study, published in the journal Neurology, assessed blood samples taken from 47 patients with mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19 in the course of their hospital stay.
Researchers, including those from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, analysed these samples by means of highly sensitive biomarkers for brain injury, and compared the results with those from a healthy control group comprising 33 people matched by age and sex.
